The problem and dangers

  • Digital life and smart phones means children are growing up with cognitive gaps, in attention, social confidence, under developed social skills, at risk of weak play/creative muscles, depleting mental health and resilience. Quick-scrolling feeds, dopamine and constant short connectivity have become a norm for children and adults, replacing depth of thought, weakening relationships and in out of balance with how human’s are wired to thrive. Research shows this rise in screen usage damages the brain and risks children’s mental-health, focus and future readiness at a crucial stage / age for identity, communication, confidence and social development. At the same time the economy of the future paradoxically places premium value on attention, deep listening, creativity, change, emotional intelligence and human connection across industries. Skills which have the highest value for our times are being lost.

  • Children aged 8-12 are reported to spend on average 4-6 hours per day on screens, and more than 50 % now own smartphones. Gitnux+1

  • High screen exposure is linked with attention problems: a systematic review found children with more screen time often show more attention-difficulties. PubMed

  • The displacement of face-to-face conversation, deep listening and sustained tasks by rapid digital stimuli undermines the development of social fluency, flow-state engagement and reflective thinking — key capacities for future wellbeing, relationships and occupational success.

  • Mental health, relationships, focus, happiness and general health are all at stake: studies demonstrate associations between higher screen/smartphone use and greater risk of anxiety, depression, worsened sleep quality, reduced physical activity and poorer academic or cognitive outcomes.
